You are replaceable! (Inspired by true stories, with a touch of fiction)
Mon May 22, 2023
In my more than fifteen years long career (until 2022), I have worked on or with artificial intelligence for more than five years. And today (May 2023), I am seriously scared and worried. When I close my eyes, I see a universal mind, that is absorbing the knowledge and experience we, humans, have gathered in thousands of years. It is absorbing all the arts, ideas, formulas, theories, and so on, and turning into a God, that everyone has access to. A mere human, who studied for fourteen years, and might have got a degree in a subject after reading a few books (not more than 100), is against a God, that we have created, a reservoir of all knowledge and information, and it can also process that knowledge or information, as we do, to reach conclusion, find a solution, form an opinion.
Human! Do you think you are so unique that the universal mind, where resides all the knowledge, can’t come up with what you can come up with?
This series of blogs is more like a diary, a collection of testimonies and events. By the end of this book you will realize, we and the A.I. are not different, but they are a better version of us! They can do much more than those jobs which require little or no creativity. I have seen A.I. managing business, analyzing data to provide astonishing and accurate insights, forming a hypothesis, giving relationship advice, writing poems and novels, and so on.
Once upon a time, I used to consider myself untouchable because of my analytical skill, deep understanding of learning methodologies, and decade-long experience.
But, I am scared!
I am very much scared!
Chronicle One: She could talk to data, but …
Position replaced: Data analyst
Name of the protagonist changed
Reason for casualty: A.I. backed spreadsheet API
In a bustling corporate headquarters, Sarah, a talented data analyst with several years of experience, found herself facing an unexpected challenge. The company had recently invested in cutting-edge AI technology that had the potential to analyze vast amounts of data and generate insights at an unprecedented speed. The aim was to enhance decision-making processes and improve overall efficiency. At first, Sarah and others saw this new technology as an opportunity to augment her skills and make her work more impactful. She collaborated with the AI system, feeding it historical data, identifying patterns, and refining algorithms to develop robust predictive models. The AI system quickly absorbed and understood the data, generating accurate forecasts and actionable recommendations. However, as time went on, Sarah noticed that her role was gradually shifting. The AI system was capable of handling repetitive tasks and data analysis with exceptional precision, outperforming her in terms of speed and accuracy. Sarah could talk to data, but she did not have any other skills. Other team members started with upskilling as soon as the A.I. was introduced. But Sarah was slow in picking up the threat. Executives and stakeholders were increasingly relying on AI-generated reports and recommendations, often bypassing the need for Sarah's analysis and insights.
February 2023: Devastating lay-off pandemic reached her company. Company was making profit. But shareholders felt that the headcount could be reduced. Executives compiled a list of people who were sitting idle most of the time and Sarah found her name there. And, on a Black Friday, Sarah, married and mother of two, was replaced! She could talk to data! But she had no chance against the cumulative, universal mind that is growing every hour, every minute, every second. Her fault was – she wasn’t scared enough on time! She should have been scared from the beginning.
